Little new money in Coalition's $10.5bn roads and rail plan

PRIME Minister John Howard has announced a $10.5 billion roads and rail plan, and denied it will put pressure on inflation.

Mr Howard, Treasurer Peter Costello and Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile announced the plan in simultaneous press conferences in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The package, most of which has already been budgeted for under the AusLink program, allows for $3 billion in Sydney, $5.2 billion in south-east Queensland and $2.45 billion in Victoria.

None of the money will be spent before 2009.
